FAQ & FUN FACTS
Segway of Hawaii-Kailua
F. A. Q.
Q What is a segway? Is it easy to balance?
A: It is a self-balancing personal transportation device designed to go anywhere people do. It is easy to use and operate. The two-wheeled Segway sports high-tech gyroscopes that monitor your balance 100 times per second and automatically responds to your body's movements. To move forward, the rider simply leans forward with hips over toes. To stop or move backwards, the rider leans back with hips over heals slightly. To turn; the handlebar acts like a joy stick on a video game, the rider simply slides the handlebar to left or to the right to go in either direction. Riding posture is standing upright on your segway, never bending the body in any direction. Segway riding is intuitive and is quick to learn for even first-timers.
Q How long, fast, and far can I ride?
A: The Segway has a top speed of 12.5 mph/20 kph and can travel up to 24 miles/38 km on a single battery charge. The State of Hawaii has segway operators limit their speeds to 8 mph on sidewalks and bike lanes. Riding times vary with grade, weight, and speed.
Q Can I rent a segway without a guide?
A: Presently, we do not allow rentals for liability and safety reasons. We designate one tour guide for a maximum of 5 riders and two for larger groups. However, we stagger groups larger than six to navigate thru the parks, town and community with respect and courtesy to others sharing in the bike lanes and sidewalks..
Q Are tours cancelled because of rain?
A: Tour reservations are not cancelled for normal weather changes, like rain or gusty tradewinds. Rain ponchos are offered complimentary. A raincheck can be given to reschedule for up to one year.
Q Is there a weight and age limit?
A: Ages of 16 years and older are legally permitted to operate a segway in the State of Hawaii. Children under this age require parental or guardian consent and accompanniment . As certified instructors, we reserve the right to disallow any rider regardless of age should they not pass the basic riding skills orientation. However, this is unlikely since EVERYONE learns how easy it is to ride on a segway. Recommended weights of 85lbs to 275lbs and a minumum height of 4 feet required to ride independently of a tour guide for maintaining maximum safety of our guests.
Q What kind of training is required and how long does it take?
A: We provide a comprehensive orientation on the operational and safety aspects of riding a segway, followed by a one-on-one instructional assist from one of our very qualified trainers and tour guides. This all takes place inside an air-conditioned showroom and training area. Everyone can learn to ride with an average of five to ten minutes allocated for each guest. Guests do not have to be physically fit, athletic, or have a good sense of balance to easily learn and ride safely. Segways are self-balancing, much easier than learning to ride a bike and they are tons of fun.
Q Am I allowed to take pictures during the tour?
A: Yes, however, for safety reasons we prefer you step off your segway to do so. Your tour guide will offer to take pictures for you with your camera. Our tour guides also carry cameras with them, taking lots of photos and video of your Segway adventure. At the conclusion of your tour we display the photos on a plasma screen for your enjoyment. Should you like the assortment of photos taken, you may purchase a CD for a nominal fee. We want you to enjoy the art of riding the segway without worry you will get those favorite photos and/or video. It is our wish that you share your segway experince with your family and friends.
Q How far in advance do I need to reserve?
A: You may purchase a year in advance, however, we recommend you call in your reservation time and date to secure your tour preference. Confirmation will be received at time of booking, unless within 7 days of travel. In this case confirmation will be received within 48 hours subject to availability.
Q Is a helmet required?
A: All riders must wear a helmet. We provide a variety of sizes and styles to insure safety and add the cool factor for the rider. Our helmets are colorful, always sanitized and the talk amongst our guests.
Q Am I responsible for damages to a segway?
A: Guests are required to provide a $100 deposit via a credit card or cash to be applied as security towards any damages to their assiged segway due to neglegence and/or unauthorized, reckless or irresponsible operation; otherwise the deposit is applied towards the purchase price of the tour. All riders should exercise respect and care for the segway they are assigned. The tour guides are responsible to assist in the mount, dismount and parking of the segways, so it is seldom we need to charge the deposit or more. We remind our guests to inspect the segways for any damage prior to riding.
Q Do I need insurance in order to ride a segway?
A: No. However, our guests must sign liability and release waivers for our insurance requirements. This does not provide insurance coverage, medical or otherwise for the rider(s). We have a general liability policy for our guests 14 years and older.
Q What is your cancellation policy?
A: If the tour is canceled by the tour operator, the full ticket price will be refunded. Cancellations prior to 48 hours are charged a minimum $10.00 per person administration fee. We charge 100% for No Shows or cancellations within 48 hours. However, you may reshedule up to one year for another time without any further charges.
